PROOF

Here ye, I offer further proof that SBC sucks, as evidenced by the stupid-beyond-all-reason remarks of the head moron in charge over there.

Umkay... Google and Vonage do not seek out my computer and make connections to it. No. I seek THEM out and I make connections to them.

And why is this OK? Oh yeah, because I pay for MY "pipe"!!!

talk to the hand

Netflix is really starting to piss me off. They have a technical problem with their website, and they won't fucking listen to me when I try to tell them what the problem is.

Basically they have a flaw in one of the two login pages they use. If you have a double-quote character in your password, it will tell you that you've entered your password incorrectly (which is bullshit). The other login page however, works fine.

I've had a HUGE email thread going with them, and finally they told me to call them. I called them up today and the explained the problem, and the first thing they tell me is "you're not supposed to be using foreign characters in your password. The double-quote is a foreign character". Ok, WTF. I explained to the guy that when I signed up with Netflix, there was NOTHING that said my password had to be alphanumeric. (see for yourself: http://www.netflix.com/Register --you have to logout of NF to see that page ) And besides, if that was a requirement, why did the website accept my password when I signed up? And why is it that I can sign in on some login screens but not others.

give it to me!

Well, I'm still trying to annoy SBC into giving me DSL. I've placed two DSL orders within 5 days. (and they cancelled both of them, apologizing and telling me that my lines won't support DSL).

As I screw around with SBC, I've been thinking about this situation, and I've concluded that the real problem here is the ownership of the infrastructure. SBC isn't going to make DSL available in my area, but no one else can either, because SBC owns the core infrastructure. I'm caught between monopolies (dsl vs cable). I think a possible solution would be for the government to own and maintain the telecom infrastructure. Then you could have any number of companies compete in the business, using that common infrastructure, without any one of them being able to bully the others and or lock them out of the business while giving their customers the shaft. I admit I don't even know how feasible this idea might be though. Could the CO and the lines to house and businesses be public owned; then the providers could connect their lines to the COs and rent space for their equipment to service that CO? I don't know, but there must be a better way of ensuring healthy competition than the current, sorry state of affairs.

a critique of THE laws

I found this objective analysis of the laws of our land. That's right, THE laws, because everybody knows that the 10 commandments trump the constitution and the bill of rights and all that other mumbo jumbo.

fixed it

I never before realized that so many things that break are in fact fixable. What can I say, I was raised in this throw-away society of ours where broken objects, especially electronic, are quickly tossed without question. When you take some time to examine something "broken" it seems all too often it is something rather trivial to fix. Yesterday I fixed my dad's Rotozip, then I used it to cut tiles in the bathroom so I can put in some new electrical outlets. The switch inside the Rotozip had somehow melted, pulling the switch contact away from the power contact. I chiseled away at the deformed plastic and got the contact back in place and put the thing back together--problem solved. It was broken, now it works fine. It's like getting something for nothing just after you thought all was lost.

spammers are from uranus

What is it with these stupid fucking spammers who can't even figure out how the fuck their own spamming software works? Lately I keep getting spam with sender addresses like: {%NAME_FROM}.

C'mon dipshits! If you're going to spam people, at least put a little effort into it and try to do it right! How likely do you think someone is to open an email from %NAME_FROM??

fast food really does suck

So why am I just now figuring this out? I think it's only been in the last year or two that I've come to this realization. Any more when I think of eating a meal at Wendy's or McDonalds or Taco Bell, etc; I sometimes lose my appetite. Probably because I start thinking of how I feel after I eat at those places (not so great). Sometimes I'll get a craving for some fast food that we don't have as often, like Arby's or Burger King, and that will sound good at first, but after I eat it I realize it's just as bad as the rest-- I must have forgotten.

So these days when I get hungry for a good meal I think of something we can make at home, or a dish at a decent restaurant. Does that mean I'm getting old?

Interesting to note that I still like pizza from pretty much anywhere except Marions, which I never did like. (rabbit turd sausage--ick)
